The 2009 Masters PGA Golf and Tigers Woods Match Up Betting Odds Preview

Head to Head matchup betting odds have been set for the 2009 Masters. Golf bettors may bet on individual golfers pitted against one another. Betting propositions have been set by oddsmakers using moneyline odds to finish with a better score at the conclusion of the Masters PGA Tournament. Backers of a player who fails to make the cut will lose a match up betting proposition against a golfer who made the cut regardless of final scores.

Here are the matchups for the 2009 Masters PGA Golf Tournament. Masters Betting odds courtesy of Bookmaker.com where the line originates.

Tiger Woods has been matched up against 3 golfers. Woods has been lined versus Phil Mickelson, Geoff Ogilvy and Padraig Harrington.

Tiger Woods has four Masters victories taking home the Green Jacket in 1997, 2001, 2002 and in 2005. Tiger finished second at Augusta in 2007 and 2008. Tiger is a very difficult golfer to defeat in long courses in match up betting and this course suits Tiger’s game very well. Woods is coming off a victory in the Arnold Palmer Invitational two weeks back. Woods is coming off knee surgery in 2008 and has only played in three tournaments in 2009.

Tigers Woods is a –250 favorite against Phil Mickelson. Backers of lefty would earn +200 on a bet on Mickelson against Tiger.

Mickelson owns 2 Green Jackets having won at Augusta in 2004 and in 2006. Mickelson finished the 2008 Masters tied for 5th place and 3 shots behind Tiger and was 8 shots behind Tiger in the 2007 Masters Tournament. Phil Mickelson has two wins in 2009 and is second in the money list this season. Mickelson missed the cut in last weeks Shell Houston Open, which was a tournament, marred by poor playing conditions due to wind and rain.

Tigers Woods is a –300 favorite against Geoff Ogilvy. The buyback on Ogilvy is +240 to beat the #1 player in the world of golf.

Ogilvy has 2 wins in 2009 and has not won a Masters. Backers of Ogilvy should be aware that his best round at Augusta has been a 70. His overall betting odds of 20-1 to win the tournament might suggest you need better than +240 odds if you are to back Ogilvy in a matchup against Tiger Woods.

Tiger Woods is a –285 favorite against Padraig Harrington. Backers of Harrington in his matchup against Woods have odds of +225.

Harrington has not won a Masters Tournament but won two Major PGA Tournaments last year in the 2008 British Open and PGA Championship. Harrington was a top 5 finisher in last years Masters and earned a top 10 placing in 2007. The Irishmen has won 3 of the past 6 Major PGA Golf Tournaments. The long course at Augusta does suit his game but many experts in the game question whether his short game is at the level of a Woods and Mickelson.

Paul Casey is a –135 favorite against Sergio Garcia. A play on Garcia returns +105.

Paul Casey was the winner of last weeks Shell Houston Open. Casey has placed well in the prior two Masters with an 11th place finish in 2007 and a Top 10 placing in 2008. Garcia in 4 events on tour this season has only a 13th place finish as his best result. Garcia missed the cut in 2007, 2008 and had a 46th place finish in 2006.

Steve Stricker is lined as a –135 favorite in a matchup against KJ Choi. A bet on Choi in this matchup will return +105. Stricker is 10th this season on the money list with three top 10 finishes. Stricker though missed the cut at the Masters in the 2008, 2007 and 2002 major event. Stricker did not compete at Augusta between 2003-2006. K.J. Choi has played The Masters the past 6 years and the South Korean has made the cuts in 5 of his past 6 Masters and owns a third place finish in 2004.

This year's Masters will be my last, says 73-year-old Gary Player

Gary Player has said this week's US Masters, his record 52nd appearance at grand slam event, will be his last. The South African Player, 73, first played at the Masters in 1957, aged 21, winning the event for the first time in 1961 and collecting two more Green Jackets in 1974 and 1978.

"I've decided that I would like to make this my last appearance in the tournament," Player said. "I've enjoyed it so much. We all have our favourite tournaments, majors, tournaments around the world, but this has been the best-organised golf tournament that I have ever played in. This will be my last major championship that I will ever play on the regular tour. Obviously I'll play some on the Senior Tour."

Despite shooting a 78 last year in the Masters second round, nine-time major winner Player said the course was getting too tough. "The hole is getting the size of a Bayer aspirin, you wonder whether you can press it in there or squeeze it in there. I'm exercising profusely, but it's very difficult at 73 to build strength. The golf course is so long. It is just so long. I mean, I'm hitting a wood to almost every single hole.

"It's just too long for me. I cannot get around. I've managed to break 80 the last two years, but it's getting to a stage now where I don't know whether I can do that out here, it's so long and I'm getting weaker."

Player credited his physical fitness for allowing him to play as long as he had at the Masters. "It is encouraging when you have exercised as hard as I have and watched my diet pretty well, that I'm able to play 52 Masters. It's a very encouraging thought.

"I stood on the tee last year when I was waiting to play and there was a bit of a hold-up, and I thought, damn it all, most of my friends at 72 are dead and I'm playing at the Masters? Most guys at my age, 73, have not seen their knees, never mind their private parts, for seven years. There's a lot of feeling going on. At least I can see where I am."
